All about The Penny Homes Future ChampioNZ Triathlon Festival

In December 2015 eighty six young triathletes took part in the inaugural Future ChampioNZ Festival in Taupo, New Zealand.

The event was split into Junior and Youth Categories, and athletes raced across Aquathlon, Open Water Swimming, Athletics and Triathlon.  The Festival culminated in a Grand Final Triathlon followed by a fun Inter-regional teams tag relay.

The festival was declared “a great success” by Triathlon NZ (  Kyle Smith & Eva Goodisson won the Junior Divisions overall, with up and comers Finn Rogers and Natalya Carter winning the Youth Division.

In 2016 & 2017 Triathlon NZ again partnered with the Future ChampioNZ Festival declaring the weekend to be their National Talent Festival & once again a great success.

The 2018 Festival is again centred in and around Taupo but with some exciting new additions to the racing format.

With the addition of the Mixed Team Relay (MTR) to both the Commonwealth Games and Olympics, teams racing has become important to Tri NZ HP and the aspirations of our young triathletes.

The MTR is a highly tactical form of racing, speed is required, but so is the ability to think under pressure, execute transitions flawlessly and co-operate as a team.

In 2018 transitions will be pivotal in athlete's success - you'll need to not only be fast across swim, bike, and run, but you'll also need to polish your transitions as racing will be fast and furious!

The Future ChampioNZ Festival's goal is to support the work of the Regional Youth Academies and their coaches, athletes will be encouraged to work with their RYC's throughout the weekend.

Athlete welfare has been recognised as important by HPSNZ and Future ChampioNZ will deliver a range of educational workshops alongside the racing.

Opportunities will be provided for athletes and regional youth coaches to spend time working on skills and strategies to compliment their racing experiences throughout the weekend.

The over-riding goal of the Future ChampioNZ Festival is to add to the Tri NZ Youth Pathway and ultimately see more Kiwi athletes succeed on the world stage whilst providing a fun and exciting race weekend for all youth athletes.
